About Pipeline

In 2016, while driving along Hawaiʻi’s North Shore during Memorial Day weekend, Gayla Young felt a spark of inspiration as she passed the legendary Banzai Pipeline. As a Native Hawaiian, she recognized that the name "Pipeline" not only reflected the iconic surf break but also captured the essence of her cultural roots and the vision she had for her future business.

Located on Oʻahu’s North Shore, the Banzai Pipeline—often simply called "Pipeline"—is one of the most renowned surf spots in the world. Known for its powerful, hollow waves that crash over a shallow reef, it attracts elite surfers and serves as the site for major competitions like the prestigious Pipe Masters.

While Hawai‘i is celebrated for its breathtaking beaches, these shores represent more than just natural beauty. In Hawaiian culture, beaches hold deep spiritual significance, symbolizing a sacred connection to the land and sea. Inspired by this relationship, Pipeline Malasadas™ is committed to protecting the ocean by promoting sustainability and reducing single-use plastics—because we all share the responsibility to mālama (care for and love) our oceans.

Our malasada journey began in 2015 when Gayla Young set out to create a bakery dedicated to local island treats, with malasadas taking center stage. After a year of testing and perfecting over 100 recipes, she opened Pipeline Bakeshop & Creamery in Kaimuki on the island of ʻOahu, quickly earning rave reviews from both locals and visitors. While the bakeshop is also known for its signature Cake Bomb®, homemade ice cream, and pastries, the Pipeline malasada remains the most popular and beloved item.

We began shipping our malasadas nationwide in 2019 before COVID-19 and recently began International shipping to Canada in 2024.

After 8 successful years in Hawaiʻi, Gayla and her team are bringing their best-selling item, the Pipeline Malasada, to Las Vegas, Nevada—opening the city’s very first dedicated malasada shop.
